Lenovo Thinkpad T60 / T60p
Mark: Average (This report is prepared by ecomstation.ru scout), source of information: Lewis G Rosenthal, http://article.gmane.org/gmane.org.netlabs.genmac.user/2896
Msg 1:
The original T60 was such a non-standard architecture that (AIUI)
IBM went back to Lenovo and demanded that they modify the design
to make it more "Linux-friendly,"
Msg 2:
People I know at Lenovo & IBM, in varying positions have told me that
this was the case.
The T60p "Linux-capable" was the first T60 design to "officially"
support Linux. The revamp of the T60 model occurred after that release,
IIRC, or that was the model specifically "requested" by IBM for their
corporate customers with large Linux deployments.
ALSA did not support sound on the T60 until...I don't recall which
release fixed the HDA issues on that model, sorry. I was more up on the
dates and such when we were trying to debug sound on the T60 under
UniAUD (I don't recall seeing any tickets or feedback from you, however,
so I suppose sound worked out of the box on your model).
The Intel video was a headache with ACPI on some Linux distros (see
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/243405
for an example).
ATI would not release sources for the driver for the video, so Linux
support lagged until someone could figure out how to handle the display
adapter.
Power management was abysmal on the original T60 & battery life poor -
unless running Windows.
Msg 3:
I rolled out about 20 of those machines to variuos clients, between T60
& T60p models. I wouldn't go near another one on the used market,
skipping between the T43 & the T61. T60's are simply *not* standard
machines. Odd BIOS, odd video, odd HDA, odd power, odd fan controllers
(more problems with fans on T60's than on T43's, and not just because of
lousy bearings).
