Normally it does do this.  They go into \lost+found.

If files were deleted instead, presumably it means they were unrecoverable.

Once upon a time there was full eSATA hotplugging supported in DaniS506. 
Some time late I commented out the related lines in the source code due 
to problems with the current state of Danis506 and DaniATAPI being 
separated into two drivers for historic reasons (i.e. IBM legacy). 
The current maintainer of those drivers may reactivate those code lines.
(Don't ask me for details, I don't have the sources around).
