November edition of russian PCWorld

2005-01-03 00:05:40 -- Eugene Gorbunoff [ecomstation.ru]

In the latest issue of popular computer magazine Russian PCWorld there is a short article related to eComStation (N 11, november 2004, pages 80-82). It talks about features of the operating system and main principles of internal architecture. This is useful for novice users or people non familiar with eComStation.

What is the lifetime of eComStation?

2004-12-18 13:36:23 -- Eugene Gorbunoff [eComStation@yahoogroups.com, Bob St.John]

December is the month of sum up and making plans for the next year.

After the discussion of SWC <> eComStation relations (no relations), new question appeared: "When the agreement between SSI and IBM expires? What will happen to eComStation after 2006?"

Bob St.John (Serenity Systems International) answers in eComStation@yahoogroups.com maillist:

First, we are talking about the OEM agreement. SSI had that before
eComStation and OS/2 is not the only product on it. And OEMs can
continue working with products after IBM withdraws them. Some OEMs
are still using Warp3, for example. One product we have is PCOM 4.3
.. which has been gone from the IBM active lists for awhile.

What I'm saying is .. as long as eComStation is a good business and
covers the expense, SSI will be able to continue to deliver it and OS/2
as part of the product. The current plan is to continue investing in
and improving eComStation. That is what is happening.

Serenity Systems International (SSI) has pubished a roadmap with important information for eComStation users. The roadmap includes information about two upcoming releases of the product, as well as two important applications for eComStation and OS/2 users. Those are the OpenOffice.org/2 and Serenity Virtual Station (SVISTA).

A joint project between SSI and InnoTek, a respected German ISV and services organization, has provided a version of SUN Microsystems OpenOffice.org which can support OS/2 and eComStation users. The package being offered by SSI includes prequisite software from InnoTek and the InnoTek Web Pack for OS/2. This software provides OS/2 and eComStation users with the best office suite features and Internet experience available, today.

The Roadmap also points to the Serenity Virtual Station, a joint effort between SSI and Parallels, Ltd of Moscow. This week the Early Support Program open to eComStation users will allow testing of SVISTA products written for Windows, Linux, and OS/2 as both guest and host platforms. A public beta of these products is planned for end of April, 2004.

The Roadmap describes a repackaging of the Application Pack, moving HOBLink X/11 Server to the Entry product and including SVISTA and OpenOffice.org in a new Application Pack, along with Lotus Smart Suite.

Other information includes a rather detailed description of the eComStation 1.2 Entry product and a general description of a major release planned for the end of the year.
