eComStation 2.0 RC5 introduces the Feedback Wizard to enable the
development team to easier collect data on specific hardware and the
success rate of ACPI support. This wizard will be invoked automatically
once, if ACPI support is configured on the system.
Since it's release on july the 4th, the eComStation 2.0 RC5 ISO file has
been downloaded over 500 times. We have received a bit more than 70 reports
generated with the Feedback Wizard.
We would like to ask you to run the Feedback Wizard and in order to have
more systems identified. Please make sure you answer the 3 questions on
ACPI, APM and performance accurately.
If you want to manually start the Wizard, this can be easily done by
clicking the Feedback Wizard icon in the Help Center. ('Desktop' -> 'Local
System' -> 'Help Center')
Once you have submitted a report, you will be able to review all reports by
others and review/edit your own reports via a webinterface. Details of this
will be emailed to you shortly after the submission. Please note: The use
of the Feedback Wizard requires a working Internet connection.
Some FAQ items specific to eComStation 2.0 RC5 have been added to the RC5
support page at: rc5report
Thanks in advance for your support!

To test new beta of eComStation you need eComStation Software Subscription.
eCS 2.0 is the biggest overhaul on OS/2 since Warp 4 maybe.
- Especialy the ACPI component touches the kernel and hardware
management at a very very deep level. And yes it will function
on most systems. We now have system running with ACPI at Mensys
with 2 Xeon CPU's and hyperthreading on (not that it gives much
performance gain hyperthreading).
- Besides that we introduced the Panorama driver that works on systems where SNAP does not work.
- We have bootable JFS.
- A reasonable working SAMBA client,
- disc resizer,
- a tool that fixes JFS problems.
- With Genmac onboard we support are quit broad array of networkcards.
- Uniaud is getting attention to support the HDA standard.
- The Popler PDF viewer is in there.
- Besides that between 400 and 600 bugs have been fixed since eCS 1.2R. Bugs that have been in eCS 1.2R but also bugs in newly introduced components.

Pavel Shtemenko published the article
How to create own os2ldr
(russian language)
OS2LDR is much more than a loader for OS2KRNL.
It also incorporates
a library of about 50 call-back functions, known internally as "Dos
Helper" functions, which the kernel uses both during and after
initialization to talk to the PC hardware. This library, it seems,
is the beginning of an attempt to insulate the core functions of
the kernel-- task management, memory management, semaphore handling,
and so on-- from the "bare metal" of the PC architecture-- the knowledge
of which ports control which peripheral chips, how the BIOS data area is
laid out, and the like. To those of you who have read the book on OS/2 for
the PowerPC, this concept should start to sound familiar. Can you say "micro-kernel"?

eComStation developers work very well. The results of 2007 are impressive.
We are working like large corporation but use minimal resources.
Many OS/2 developers are still frozen. Some of them are waiting
for prepayment, other developers don't know what are the goals, what do users need.
Please indicate them new targets!
Users have posted a dozen of suggestions already ("Perfect eComStation" stack)
- For example, you can send a self-made screenshot of future eCS desktop with improved navigation means.
- Which new PM controls do you need?
- Which applications do you need? Draw fake picture of non-existing application for eComStation
- Which libraries (runtimes) should be included by default?
Attention, we should separate two threads of ideas: all basic functionality development plans are
collected in Evolutionary Sprint plan (minimal plan).
"Perfect eComStation" stack is used to collect revolutionary non-standard
ideas aimed to attract new users to eComStation (maximal plan).

eComStation market is changing, new users need books and tutorials.
eCo Software support service invested several thousand euro into books preparation, today we offer (russian text):
- Frequently asked questions. eComStation installation.
- Frequently asked questions. eComStation usage and optimization.
(Photo) The books are aimed at users and companies which have many computers and should solve different problems in short time.
The books play important role in the development of eComStation market:
- we can advertise eComStation via book shops (it's impossible promote eCS via TV, there are banners in the Internet already)
- this increases the turnover of resellers (extends selection of goods - good addition to eCS box and electronic shareware soft)
The next step is to start delivery of books:
- Official guide to using eComStation
- Frequently asked questions. ACPI, JFS, Panorama VESA

While a developer is debugging software for eComStation,
a dozen of well-wishers are distributing myths and lie about the system,
fill up the forums with advertisement papers from competitors.
To withstand the black PR, we opened new site:
eComStation Myths
(the 1-st page is aimed at interested guests, the 2-nd is for
eComStation and OS/2 Warp users which have doubts) |
